The Middlesex County Historic Courthouse Committee met on Wednesday, Feb. 16, and discussed ways to create in an educational context an accurate history of Middlesex County’s political and social history at the historic courthouse in Saluda.

The group discussed the need to phase the project and limit scope in the first phase to ensure the task can be completed in a reasonable time. To encourage inclusiveness, it was agreed that the Black community needs to be involved and one area of discussion was to research county appointed and elected Black officials throughout history and find ways to recognize those currently not profiled at the courthouse.

Other discussion centered around covering activities broader than just those tied to the courthouse building and grounds. The courthouse was a government center as well as a community center, in addition to serving its judicial function, it was stated.

The committee has set a goal of seeing some results by the end of 2022 and will meet again after there has been some feedback from the Fairfield Foundation regarding initial research.
