by Tom Chillemi –

Middlesex County is among those counties that lost population between the April 1, 2020 census figures and the “July 1, 2021 Population Estimates for Virginia and its Counties and Cities” published last month by the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service, Demographics Research Group, at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

The following are the center’s “estimates” from its Jan. 28 report.

  • King and Queen County was nearly flat with the loss of two individuals for a total of 6,606.
Gloucester County saw a slight increase of 20 people, bringing its total population to 38,731.
  • Essex County added 42 persons, (.4%) for a total of 10,64XXXXX.
  • On the Northern Neck, Lancaster County’s population increased by 26 to 10,945.
  • Northumberland lost 205 people, a decline of 1.7%.
