Middlesex County participants gather at Hartfield’s Piankatank River Golf Club during the Dec. 27, 2021 Middle Peninsula Audubon Christmas Bird Count. The group includes, from left, V. Ross Johnson, Sector Leader Bill Blair, Rose Moncure, Ken Carroll, Mike Grose and Rebecca Reed. The totals were 5,435 birds counted, down from 7,417 the previous year; and 80 species seen, compared to 78 the previous year. It is theorized that the lower count is due to it not being cold enough up north in December to motivate the waterfowl to move south for better food sources. Thirty-nine people participated in the count. For information, email scrocket@cox.net.
