Middlesex supervisors split on preference for local bidders

A generational Middlesex County Board of Supervisors issue came to light again at the board’s January meeting as two supervisors encouraged the board to hire a local contractor whose bid was more costly than an out-of-county contractor’s bid.

Over the years, different boards of supervisors have debated whether or not close low bids should go to the local contractor or to contractors from out of the region. Sometimes boards have gone with the local contractor.

The logic stated by other boards being that revenues going to a local contractor usually stay in the county and support the local economy as the local contractor hires local workers and buys materials locally.

Saluda District Supervisor Don Harris and Hartfield Supervisor John Koontz wanted to support the local contractor. Church View Septic (CVS) Inc. bid on a job to install a waterline from the Middlesex Water Authority’s line at the road to county-owned buildings at Hummel Field airport. The low bid was $19,500 from K.L. Langford Excavating in Woodford. CVS’s bid was about $2,000 more. The highest bid was $48,600.

Jessie, Pinetop District representative Lud Kimbrough and Harmony Village supervisor Reggie Williams voted against the motion to give the contract to CVS. Right after, a motion was made to hire K.L. Langford Excavating. The motion carried 4-1…
