Koontz, Carnes pledge scholarships to pair of MHS govt. students

by Larry Chowning –

An issue over a scholarship allegedly offered by Middlesex County Supervisor John Koontz has apparently been resolved, according to school superintendent Dr. Tracy Seitz.

Last week, Koontz received scholarship paper forms from the Middlesex High School (MHS) guidance office to offer a $1,000 college scholarship with his own funds to a pair of MHS government students.

Back in October 2021, Koontz spoke before the MHS Senior Government class and went away with teacher and students thinking a competitive scholarship would be available for the best research on a project he had suggested for the class.

Students, with teacher approval, completed the projects, but when Koontz was notified that the projects were ready for him to judge, he indicated that was not his intent.

On Friday, Koontz said via telephone it was all a “miscommunication” but that he would make good on the scholarship.

With Koontz’s donation of the scholarship the winners of the project will now receive funds from two sources. Koontz’s political opponent in the last election, write-in candidate Katie Carnes, reported last week that she had taken the last of her campaign funds to also give the MHS students a scholarship.
