Confederate battle flags (left) flew on the Middlesex County Historic Courthouse grounds in Saluda Saturday as demonstrators supporting the 1910 Daughters of the Confederacy monument there made their presence known.

A local group known as “Vigil for Racial Justice and Peace” that has regularly demonstrated at the courthouse on Saturdays since the death of George Floyd in May 2020 were also in front of the courthouse with their signs of “Love Thy Neighbor” and “Hate won’t make US great.”

People passing by in cars honked their horns in support of their preferred group.

The Confederate monument, which appears in the left corner of the left photo, was supported by the majority of county voters in November 2021 who voted not to take the monument down.
