Urbanna seeks loan to fund well drilling; must finish by 2024

The Town of Urbanna will be applying for a low interest loan from the USDA Rural Development to drill a new well. On Jan. 13, the town council conducted the required public hearing and notified the public of the proposal to borrow money. No member of the public commented at the hearing.

The town is under a state mandate by the Virginia Department of Health to drill a new well by 2024, and drill another new well by 2032. The town needs two wells, with one backing up the other in case it’s needed.

Town Zoning Administrator Roy Kime, said the new well and related equipment is anticipated to cost $1.1 million. “We wouldn’t be putting in this well if we weren’t required to,” said Kime.

The current wells do not meet new state standards, which require among other things that the pipe be lined with a casing so that water from one aquifer does not mix with another…
