Chargers ignite fourth quarter afterburners to blast way past Pointers to 48-44 victory
by Larry Chowning –
The Middlesex High School (MHS) varsity boys basketball team, now 7-2 in the win-loss column, pulled off a major, 48-44, come-from-behind Tidewater District win against the West Point Pointers on Tuesday, Jan. 11.
West Point dominated the game through the third quarter and most of the fourth quarter. It wasn’t until Jaquan Griffin, Montrell Oakley, Malachi Dandy and Michael Hammond turned on their offensive afterburners in the fourth quarter of the game did the Chargers take the lead. MHS scored 16 points in the fourth quarter.
West Point led on the scoreboard up until 2:56 left in the fourth quarter when Oakley had an offensive board putback for 2 points that put the Chargers up 46-44.
The Chargers were scheduled to host King William, Tuesday, Jan. 18; and travel to Carver Academy, Friday, Jan. 21. At the game Tuesday night against West Point, MHS Athletic Director Matt Stamm said everything is tentative now as COVID-19 is impacting scheduling.
