Charles Melvin Bennett Sr., 87, of Saluda passed away on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2021.
He served in and was retired from the United States Air Force. During his military career he was stationed in various Air Force bases from the east coast to the west coast.
Following his military service, he went on to own and operate Mill End Carpet Shop in Hartfield.
He was a 50-plus year member of the Masons. He was very involved with the Moose Lodge in Hartfield. Charles was a champion skeet shooter. He enjoyed boating, golf, hunting, fishing and most of all spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include his son Charles (Chip) Bennett Jr. (Sue); his daughters, JoAnne Layden (Reggie), Margie McMillen (Tony), Cathy Colley (Mike); nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a great niece and nephew; and many cousins.
A celebration of his life is planned for 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, 2022 at Lower United Methodist Church in Hartfield. There will be a military service at Arlington National Cemetery later this year.
