The first revenues arriving from the Middlesex County and Town of Urbanna cigarette taxes for August-September and October were reported this month with the county receiving $57,178 and the town $1,990.
The counties involved are Middlesex, Lancaster, and Westmoreland and the towns of Urbanna, Colonial Beach, Montross and Warsaw.
The regional cigarette stamp was created by the Virginia Department of Taxation. NNPDC developed a list of every retail operation that sells cigarettes in member localities and the wholesalers in the business.
The Town of Urbanna had only one retail store reported by CBRCTC that sells cigarettes and that was the Urbanna Market, the town’s local grocery store.
Middlesex County has retail cigarette outlets throughout the county in stores at Saluda, Church View, Cooks Corner, Syringa, Locust Hill, Hartfield and Deltaville.
Judging by the first revenue count, the tax annually could amount to as much as $228,000 in new revenues for the county and $8,000 for the town.
