State arson team investigating series of blazes in K&Q houses of worship, including one on Nov. 2
by Larry Chowning –
Fire destroyed yet another church in King and Queen (K&Q) County as New Hope Memorial Baptist Church near Glenns was destroyed by the Tuesday, Nov. 2, night-time blaze.
This is the third K&Q county church to have major fire damage in just more than a year as Old Church United Methodist Church near Shanghai caught fire in September 2020 and had its education and fellowship hall destroyed and Lower King and Queen Baptist in Dragonville was destroyed by fire in August.
Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Ray Burch said that Middlesex’s Urbanna and Water View volunteer fire departments had 15 firefighters to respond to the New Hope fire that occurred around 11:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
Along with Urbanna and Water View, Gloucester Volunteer Fire Department, Central and Lower King and Queen volunteer fire companies and Walkerton Volunteer Fire Department all responded to the fire.
On Nov. 3, state police on the church grounds stated that the fire is under investigation by a state police arson team. Burch said the fire in August at Lower King and Queen Baptist Church is still under investigation too.
