While shopping recently, I heard a commotion and turned to see a frustrated mother bent over speaking to her young daughter with her finger raised: “If you keep acting like this, you will stay home and not get to shop with me any longer. Do you understand?” The girl stared speechless at her mother while standing behind her mini-shopping cart. On top of the cart a flag read, “Customer in Training.”
Someone has said, “human beings do not live to consume; we consume to live.” Some things are more important than deciding which products to consume, and how much. Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train children in the right way, and when old, they will not stray.” Teaching a child how to behave is essential to a well-lived life, and the importance of life-training far exceeds learning how to be a consumer. I thank God for that faithful mother who knows the difference between living to consume and consuming to live…
