The 16-foot-long bridge leading to the Town of Urbanna Marina was last inspected by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) in 2011, said Kelly Hannon, communications manager for the Fredericksburg District of VDOT. Following the inspection, VDOT recommended that the town significantly reduce the vehicle load crossing the bridge, or close it to traffic, Hannon explained, in response to questions posed by the Sentinel.
“The bridge and road belong to the town, and posting the bridge with a vehicle weight limit, maintaining the posting sign at the bridge, and/or making repairs and/or replacing the bridge is a town responsibility,” said Hannon via email.
A sign stating the weight limit of five tons was erected at the bridge, which has also been referred to as a “culvert.” The sign has been missing for several years…
