MHS-CCS gridiron matchup canceled

by Larry Chowning –

The Middlesex High School (MHS) football team was scheduled to play the Christchurch Seahorses on Bristow/Boxley Charger Field at the Syd Thrift Athletic Complex at MHS in Saluda on Friday night. The game, however, was canceled on Tuesday, Aug. 31.

Christchurch School (CCS) is 100 years old this year as the private school was founded in Middlesex County in 1921. MHS was created in 1949 with consolidation of the all-white Syringa and Saluda high schools.

When former CCS gridiron great Archie Soucek was asked Tuesday if Middlesex and Christchurch ever played, he jokingly said, “Yeah, 100 years ago!”

MHS Principal Susan Fleet said she was sorry to have had to cancel the game. “We were all looking forward to seeing what our team can do,” she said. “They did well in the scrimmage against Mathews.”

Although school officials are unable to speak about the reason for cancellation, high school and college sports games across the nation are being canceled due to COVID-19.

According to a Tuesday post on a Middlesex High School social media page, the Chargers previously scheduled home opener vs. Mathews that was canceled is now set for Oct. 15.
