Town council divided on constructing a pier

About eight years ago, VDOT placed a five-ton weight limit on this “culvert,” which resembles a bridge, that leads to the Urbanna Town Marina. In 2015, the town council placed the estimated $80,000 repair on the 2015-20 Capital Improvement Plan. No repairs have been made. The Urbanna Town Council is divided on what should be done with a narrow strip of land where Virginia Street meets Urbanna Creek. Payne’s Crab House used to shed crabs on this 30-foot-wide parcel that is now vacant.

The question of what the town should do with the narrow strip of land has come up before the town council on a few occasions. The issue is back and may be discussed when council meets tonight, Thursday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m.

In recent years, the majority of council has opposed building a dock. In September 2020, the previous council agreed to put a kayak launch and kiosk.

Now, the proposed pier appears to be gaining momentum, but there is opposition…
