Lower K&Q Baptist Church in Dragonville burns to the ground in 1 a.m. Friday blaze

The smoke was still smoldering (above) at Lower King and Queen Baptist Church on Friday after the old church caught fire and burned to the ground. The site is in the Church View-Dragonville area. Below is a view of the church before the 101-year-old building was destroyed by fire. Ironically, it was built to replace an earlier church building that was also lost in a blaze. Lower King and Queen Baptist Church in Dragonville was destroyed by an early morning fire on Friday, Aug. 13, as more than 40 firefighters from area fire companies responded to the blaze.

Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department (MVFD) Fire Chief Ray Burch said he knew it was a “major” fire when he walked out the door of his home in Water View and he could see the glow from the blaze in the sky. The church is about two miles from the Middlesex County line and Dragon Run at 204 Timber Branch Road in King and Queen (K&Q) County.

“The church was totally engulfed in flames when we got the call at 1 a.m. in the morning,” said MVFD President Ben Burch. “When we got there it was just a matter of pouring water on ashes. It was a sad sight.”

Seven fire departments worked the fire. MVFD (Urbanna) and Water View Volunteer Fire Department responded from Middlesex, while departments from Essex, K&Q, West Point and Tappahannock came to fight the blaze.

Ray Burch said state fire officials arrived on the site later on Friday, and that the cause of the fire is under investigation…
