Robert Alley Mannell, 87, of Richmond and Deltaville, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 23, 2021.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Joan Magee Mannell. Also surviving are his son, Robert Benjamin “Ben” Mannell and his wife, Ashley Mannell, and their children, Clementine, Chloe and Clara; daughter, Lindsay Grose and her husband, Michael Grose, and their children, Lara, Samantha, Grace and Jacob.
Born and raised in Richmond, he moved to Deltaville, in 1994 and became an active member of the community. He served as a board member for Philippi Christian Church and the Deltaville Community Association. For 39 years, he worked for the Commonwealth of Virginia, earning his professional engineer license and working on many of the major interstate projects in Virginia before retiring in 1991 as assistant state location and design engineer at VDOT. Following his public career, he went to work in the transportation private sector leading several Richmond engineering offices for more than a decade.
Robert enjoyed his retirement, sitting on his dock by the bay, surrounded by family, enjoying the occasional cigar, and watching his grandchildren enjoy the river while the boats returned to harbor. He will be remembered for his life mission of quiet faith serving his family, friends and church.
The family will receive friends for a memorial service planned for 11 a.m. July 14. It will be followed by food and refreshments at Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road, Midlothian.
Robert encouraged acts of service to care for those around him; in lieu of flowers please consider donating or serving a charity of your choice in memory of him.
