Mick Sampson, who grew up in Middlesex County, was one of two mates on the boat Widespread that won the Big Rock Marlin fishing tournament in Morehead City, N.C., on June 18.
Widespread was trolling more than 80 miles from land. Sampson was working the port (left) side of the boat when a hungry marlin spotted the bait skimming the surface of the water.
“It was big enough that the wake off the fish’s head was pushing the lure out of the way so he couldn’t catch the lure,” Sampson explained. “So I had to crank the lure away from it so it would get fired up. It stuck its whole head out of the water and opened his mouth.”
The 656.5-pound fish took the bait. “It was game on from there…” For assistance, call 804-758-2328.There's more to this story...
