The community is invited to continue the observance of Juneteenth this coming weekend at a two-day celebration in Saluda. The two-day commemoration is being sponsored by Game Changers, a coalition of local religious and civic organizations. Planned for this Saturday and Sunday, June 26 and 27, these high-spirited events will include a Saturday parade and a Sunday outdoor celebration.
Juneteenth commemorates the day, June 19, 1865, when Union Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger issued an order declaring that enslaved people in Texas were free. Juneteenth was always celebrated in Texas and became a state holiday there in 1980. In the ensuing years, most states have declared it a holiday, including Virginia in 2020. Just last week, Juneteenth National Independence Day became a federal holiday when legislation was passed by a unanimous United States Senate, by a vote of 415-14 in the House of Representatives, and then signed into law by President Joseph R.
