Deltaville 5K race-fun run is celebrating its 10th year

Onlookers lining General Puller Highway blow Independence Day bubbles and shoot water from squirt guns to cool off participants in the 2017 Deltaville 5K and Kids Fun Run. The 2021 Deltaville 5K and Kids Fun Run is set for or 7:15 and 7:30 a.m. Saturday, July, 3, starting at the Deltaville Community Assn. building. The entry fee goes to support DCA facilities — including the pool, tennis and basketball courts and ballpark. For information or to sign up, visit www.dvl5K.com. (Photo by Larry Chowning)

The 10th running of the Deltaville 5K and Kids Fun Run takes is set for Saturday, July 3, starting and finishing in front of the Deltaville Community Association building at 17147 General Puller Highway in Deltaville.

The Kids Fun Run will start at 7:15 a.m., immediately followed by the 5K, a 3.1-mile foot race through Deltaville.

Online registration will remain open through the morning of the event. Walkup registration is available during packet pickup at the event site from 4-7 p.m. Friday, July 2 and 6-7 a.m. Saturday, July 3.

The family-friendly event is a great way to celebrate Independence Day. There will be crab races during the event. The Middlesex Family YMCA will host a children’s corral for any parents needing child care while they race.  Event festivities will conclude after the awards ceremony, so folks can return to their holiday activities.

Returning for 2021 is the fan-favorite and US Track and Field-certified Jackson Creek course. There will be staggered starts for racers of all levels, offering runners the opportunity to post fast finishing times and great fun for walkers — many of whom show up in red, white, and blue to add to the fun.

All participants will receive a finisher’s medal to celebrate their accomplishments. Teams posting the three quickest times and the top three finishers in each age group will receive place medals at the awards ceremony, which will begin at 9:15 a.m.

The  Jackson Creek Course will follow General Puller Highway (Route 33) and Lover’s Lane and will be completed by 9 a.m. At 7:30 a.m., expect a minor delay on Route 33 at the beginning of the 5K. Lover’s Lane will be closed during the race.

The event began as a fundraiser to aid recovery from the 2011 tornado that ripped through Deltaville. Each year, all proceeds are given back to the community through the Deltaville Community Association. The DCA is a nonprofit organization serving the community to better the quality of life for Deltaville residents and visitors. Find more information on the DCA’s efforts at www.DeltavilleVA.com.
