The Middlesex High School (MHS) girls track team was paced at the Virginia 1A state track meet at James Madison University in Harrisonburg on Friday, June 18, by senior Lane Anderson.
Middlesex finished 12th as a team in state with 24 points. Anderson paced the Lady Chargers by winning the state shot put title with a state record throw of 42’5.75”. The state record was 40’7.5”. The record was broken or tied four times during the event.
Anderson broke the old record twice and second place finisher Haley Hollins of Auburn High School tied and broke the old record in the competition. The competition between Hollins and Anderson was intense and exciting.
Each thrower gets six throws in the state meet. On her first throw Anderson broke the state record with a 40’7.75”. It was obvious from the start the event was going to be competitive when Hollins first throw went 40’7.5” to tie the old state record.
Hollins took the lead on her fifth throw with a 41’4.50” toss and another state record. Anderson’s fifth throw was 40’1”, which meant she had one more throw in the event.
Hollins last throw was 40’6”. Anderson entered the box with everything on the line and she nailed her last throw with 42’5.75”. She broke the state record and her own MHS school record of 42’2”…
