A student pilot and an instructor escaped with minor injuries after making an emergency landing in waters off of Mathews County, the Virginia State Police reported.
On Monday, June 14, about 12:31 p.m. VSP was notified a single engine airplane had crashed into waters near Horn Harbor, about two miles southwest of Wolf Trap Lighthouse. The 2005 Diamond DA-20 airplane originated from Manassas. A simulated instrument approach was being conducted to Tangier Island when the engine quit. An emergency was declared and the plane was forced to land in the water. The aircraft landed near a Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) research vessel and the crew rescued the student and instructor from the water with minor injuries…
