A stiff fourth inning wind blowing in from the outfield turned Tyler West’s would-be two-run home run into a warning track flyout. But two innings later, he overcame Mother Nature.
West blasted a three-run shot off the top of the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth, erasing a 2-0 deficit, and the Deltaville Deltas went on to defeat the Tappahannock Tides, 5-3, in Sunday night’s rain-delayed home opener at Deltaville Ballpark.
The weekend’s early rain pushed the 2021 opener back 24 hours, and the Deltas and Tides, longtime rivals, took the field in wet, windy, and chilly conditions more akin to March or October baseball than Memorial Day Weekend.
The Deltas return home for a pair of games this weekend, leading off with Friday night’s matchup with the Heathsville Hurricanes. On Saturday night, the Deltas play host to west division rival Richmond Brewers. Both games start at 7:30 p.m. at Deltaville Ballpark.
