Previous record stood for more than a quarter century

A 26-year-old Middlesex High School (MHS) girls discus record was broken Thursday, May 27, in a quad track meet with Charles City, King and Queen Central and West Point at the John Clements Memorial Track at MHS in Saluda.
On her first throw, MHS senior Lane Anderson broke the 125-foot, one-inch school record held by Sharon Boyd since 1995 with a 128-foot, six-inch throw. On her second throw she broke her own record with a 132-foot toss.
On her third attempt, Anderson threw the discus 131-feet, six inches and on her final toss she hit the 125-foot mark. “After I broke the record on the first throw it took the pressure off me and I relaxed and made that long throw,” she said.
Since the start of the season, Anderson has been inching her way towards a school record in the discus. She came within inches two weeks ago with a 124-foot, 11-inch throw.
“Lane has been throwing 130 feet in practice and I felt she was going to break the record at some point,” said coach Joel Anderson. “There is a different type of pressure though in practice than there is in a meet.”
Anderson is now a double school record holder as she also holds the MHS school record in the shot put with a 42-foot, two-inch throw. She broke her own school record of 41-feet, two inches in a meet on May 14.
Anderson is going to National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I school Bowling Green State University in Ohio in the fall on a track and field scholarship.
