The Middlesex High School (MHS) varsity soccer team (3-0) overcame early jitters and rode a Laney Hall hat trick to beat the Mathews High School Blue Devils 5-1 on Wednesday, May 12.
The Chargers controlled early possession and got their reward with an attacking goal from L. Hall down the left flank at the 15-minute mark. Following the initial goal, Mathews upped pressure on the ball, leading to Middlesex miscues in possession and bad passes. That resulted in Mathews evening the score on a free kick — their only shot on goal the entire game — and arriving to the break tied at 1-1.
“During the break, we talked about being more patient and getting our two central midfielders more involved. They responded. Wyatt (Evans) was excellent and Lane (Glasco) made some big steps.”
After halftime, Middlesex again dominated possession and eliminated the mistakes that affected them in the first period. Those efforts were rewarded by a L. Hall penalty kick goal from a penalty box handball. Hall made it 3-1 after surging past the defense and beating the Mathews goalkeeper to seal his hat trick.
Middlesex then closed the scoring with a penalty kick from Shawn Hickey and a final score by Marek Hanscom…
