MC eyes applying treated sewage to land, not into water

“Land application” of treated wastewater in Middlesex County has been talked about for years. Land application is an alternative to discharging the treated water into a river or creek.

The Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) has committed to run a sewer line from Saluda down General Puller Highway (Route  33) and Twiggs Ferry Road (Route 3) to Mathews and ultimately to Yorktown for treatment. It’s slated to be online in 2024.

As an alternative, land application would require a treatment plant locally with the treated water piped underground, where it would be an irrigation system. Plants would take up the nutrients, which are hard to remove from wastewater. With land application, the land can still be farmed for crops that are not for human consumption.

A municipal land application system has been in use on the Northern Neck for several years…
