The Middlesex High School volleyball team finished the season as one of the top four Class A teams in the state.
On April 20 the Lady Chargers made a respectable showing in the opening round of the State Class A Tournament, but lost 3-1 to Riverheads High School, which is in the Shenandoah Valley near Staunton.
After losing the first set 25-8, Middlesex bounced back to win the second set 25-23. The Lady Chargers had a 3-point lead late in the third set, but Riverheads prevailed 25-23, before winning the fourth set 25-15. “Riverheads definitely knew we were there,” said Lady Charger Head Coach Brian Walton. “We started pretty slow in the first set but then we settled in and played very well,” said Walton. “Riverheads is a very good fundamental team and plays great defense. I’m very proud of my girls for rebounding like they did after the bad first set.”
Riverheads has been the state runner up for the past two seasons.
This was the Lady Chargers third trip to the state tournament in the past four years. They earned a spot by being Region 1A champions for the first time since 2010. “I’m very proud of our season,” said Walton, “and I’m also very proud of going to the state tournament three out of the last four years!”
