The Middlesex High School (MHS) golf team had one of its highest team finishes in school history when the Chargers took third as a team at the State 1A Virginia Golf tournament on April 19 at the Pete Dye River golf course in Radford.
The Chargers were paced by Peyton Lambert who shot a 79 and finished fourth individually at the tournament. Lambert was awarded a state medal as the top six golfers in the tournament won medals.
This was the first year as head coach of the golf team for MHS Physical Education teacher David Lutz. “As a team our biggest improvement was consistency, which comes with the increased amount of playing and practicing,” he said.
“Peyton (Lambert) stayed very consistent for us throughout the season and spent countless hours on the range and around the course to really get dialed in,” said Lutz.
“Garrison (Robins) ended the season as a constant for the team as well,” said the coach.
“Linton (Robins) made a huge adjustment about halfway through the season when he decided not to use his driver anymore,” said Lutz.
“Thomas (Wilson) was always our player who was going to keep the ball in play and limit the big number,” said Lutz.
“Jackson (Murray) spent a lot of time working on his swing path early on and that work paid off as he got rid of his occasional slice and began to hit most shots straight with a slight draw,” said Lutz.
“Hudson (McMinn) made tremendous improvement this year. He went through a full swing transformation and he worked his butt off to make sure he dialed in the new swing.” said Lutz.
