Urbanna Baptist Church is helping preserve history

A Parlett’s Painting worker revamps the original main doors of Urbanna Baptist Church (UBC) last week. To facilitate the task, the doors were temporarily removed and placed atop sawhorses in the parking lot of the Watling Street house of worship. Multiple generations have passed through the doors to attend services at UBC. (Photo by Larry Chowning)

Museums seem to get most of the credit for preservation of local history, but churches deserve some too.

Urbanna Baptist Church had Parlett’s Painting last week meticulously refinish and paint the original doors of the church in the church parking lot.

The first hands to open and close the Urbanna Baptist Church doors came in 1896, when Urbanna builder and charter member of the church Charles Henry Palmer set the doors and swung them back and forth to gauge tightness. It is refreshing to think that today’s God-fearing hands are still swinging those doors back and forth.

Hats-off to the members of Urbanna Baptist Church for preserving local history…
