LUMC luminarias, rock pile explained

Though the photo was taken in the daytime, after dark, luminarias now light the way nightly at Lower United Methodist Church in Hartfield. (A luminaria is a lantern consisting of a votive candle set in a small paper bag weighted with sand.) A special stone pile at LUMC is another feature of the display along General Puller Highway (Route 33). During this Lenten season of meditation and contemplation, LUMC invites the community to come and lay its burdens down. A sign at the church urges passersby to take a stone from the pile as a symbol of whatever may lie heavy on their heart, walk the path there, and place their “burden” at the foot of the cross, in background. “Have a quiet moment of prayer, and leave with God’s blessing,” a LUMC rep said. For information, call the church at 804-776-6250. (Contributed photos)
