COVID-19 fears close MC schools one day

The threat of COVID-19 cases associated with the schools continues to hamper in-school learning in the Middlesex County Public Schools system (MCPS).

School superintendent Dr. Peter Gretz reported Thursday, Feb. 18, that MCPS was canceling all in-school classes on Friday, Feb. 19, due to two cases of the virus.

Although MCPS in-school classes have been disrupted during the pandemic with the quarantining of some students and school employees, this was the first time since in-school studies started in November that a day has been suspended due to the virus.

Although Gretz said in an email on Feb. 18, that there were two confirmed cases of the virus, he issued a corrected email on Feb. 19 that stated, “First, a correction — there was one confirmed case, not two, that has led to four individuals having to quarantine…


MCPS is using a hybrid in-school setting where the student body is separated in half and labeled A and B groups. The A group is attending in-school classes on Monday and Tuesday, conducting virtual classes on Thursday and Friday. The B group attends in-school classes on Thursday and Friday, with virtual on Monday and Tuesday. The entire student body is virtual on Wednesdays so school buildings and buses can be thoroughly cleaned that day.
