The Middlesex Christian Skaters Skateboarding Club (MCSSC) may soon have a new county sanctioned skate park on a concrete slab left over from the playground at the old Rappahannock Central Elementary School at Cooks Corner.

The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors (MCBS) voted unanimously on Tues., Feb. 2, to allow MCSSC to use the slab providing the club and County Attorney Heather Lewis can work out a signed liability waiver and come to an understanding of the type of equipment to be on the slab.

Middlesex County Parks and Recreation (MCPR) Director Karen Reed endorsed the project and Harmony Village supervisor Reggie Williams made the motion to allow MCSSC to use the slab providing there is no cost to the county.

During the public comment period several people spoke in favor of the skateboard park. Jim Knupp of Hartfield encouraged the board to allow the club to use the slab. A skateboard park is a good way to provide a safe designated space for children to keep healthy and physically fit, he said.

Lauren Wood of Urbanna said the skateboard park encourages “mind and body wellness” and she said if it becomes an official park “I’d love to see it named for Melinda Hart. She loved children.”

Hart was a Middlesex County Sheriff’s Department deputy sheriff who died in 2019.
