The Laney family (above), visitors from Alexandria, saw Urbanna for the first time Sunday — right at the time the season’s biggest snowfall thus far was arriving in the area. As the snowflakes fall, the Laney boys, Luke, 4, and David, 6, show off a snowman they just built at the Town of Urbanna’s Waterman’s Park on the Rappahannock River, while joined by parents, Harold and Carly. The family asked if snow was an Urbanna winter norm. When told it was not as frequent as it once was, they responded that they thought it was a “special time” to be in town. About two inches fell on Urbanna in the morning on Jan. 31 before changing to rain in the afternoon. Middlesex County Public Schools delayed opening two hours the following day. Sunday’s snowfall was preceded by a separate Thursday, Jan. 28 snowfall, one in which Hartfield’s Mike Grose captured a red-shouldered hawk checking out the wintry view while perched in a snow-coated Hartfield tree. Off and on snow showers are forecast to return to the Urbanna area on Tuesday, Feb. 9, according to weather.com. (Photos by Larry Chowning and Mike Grose)
