School board members withhold comment on Gretz plea to look at allowing some sports

The Middlesex County School Board (MCSB) heard a report Monday, Jan. 11, at a meeting conducted in the St. Clare Walker Middle School auditorium from Superintendent Peter Gretz to consider the possibility of Middlesex County Public Schools (MCPS) participation in some fall Virginia High School League (VHSL) sports seasons.

Due to COVID-19, the school board agreed earlier this year to cancel VHSL winter sports and put on hold a decision to go forward with fall and spring sports. The cancelled winter sport season included basketball, wrestling, indoor track and swimming.

Fall sports include golf, volleyball, football, cross country and competition and sideline cheer. Dr. Gretz suggested that golf, volleyball, cheer and cross country, in his opinion, could be offered within the safety net of VHSL COVID-19 social distancing…
