A sample of the new street lights proposed for Cross Street, left, can be seen at the home of former town council member George DeVries at 355 Chandler St. It closely matches the look of the lights on Virginia Street in the other photo. However, the new lights are solar powered and do not require wiring. The pole is at DeVries home temporarily because when it was delivered the town was without a town administrator and the office was closed. (Photos by Larry Chowning)

The Urbanna Beautification Committee has partnered with the Urbanna Town Council to purchase street lights on Cross Street.
Council voted last fall to buy solar-powered street light poles to be erected on Cross Street. A sample was erected behind the town hall.
Council voted in December 2020 to purchase a sample pole and if approved the UBI will purchase the rest. A sample of the new street lights can be seen at DeVries home at 355 Chandler St.
Solar powered
The proposed poles are battery powered and charged by solar so they do not require a power line being run to them, which would be cost prohibitive.
The town is waiting for a permit from VDOT, and the light poles must “break away” if struck by a motor vehicle.
