The morning I wrote this column was one of those rare times when I actually wrote a paper check. It occurred to me that it was probably the last time I would write 2020 as the actual date of record. Like most of you, I am glad to see 2020 go and hope that 2021 will be a better year.

In reality 2020 is just a number. We have lots of numbers in our lives and unless you happen to have the winning lottery numbers many of the numbers we rely on are pretty random. The New Year for example is supposed to mark two-thousand-and-twenty-one years since the birth of Christ, but Herod died in 4 B.C., so Jesus had to be born before that so this year ought to be at least 2025. So what difference does the number make?
