At the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors (MCBS) first-of-year work session on Friday, Jan. 8, the board authorized Middlesex Broadband Authority Executive Director Kevin Gentry to use $141,000 — the remainder of the county’s Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES) funds — to purchase and install additional wireless broadband equipment on the Jamaica District communications tower at Church View.
Supervisors did not take an official vote but the funding was approved on a consensus opinion basis of the board. All board members agreed and authorized Gentry to move ahead.
Gentry reported that additional broadband “wireless” equipment needs to be installed on Jamaica and Saluda towers to provide more internet access to some citizens in those districts. He noted that it would cost approximately $175,000 to equip each tower.
Board members said that the community with highest need for expanded internet access is Jamaica…
