Oyster Festival Foundation uses grant to buy fest site

Decades ago, the late Charles Bristow, a longtime Urbanna Oyster Festival official, struck an agreement with owners of 3.5 acres next to Taber Park whereby the Oyster Festival Foundation would maintain the property so the festival could use the parcel once a year to set up the Festival Village vendors, an entertainment stage and most recently a beer garden. 

As vacant parcels in town disappeared through development this vacant parcel next to Taber Park became all the more critical. “We could not lose access to that property,” said Joe Heyman, chairman of the Urbanna Oyster Festival Foundation, adding that this property generated about $40,000 each year for the festival.

Heyman estimated it would take the foundation five years to come up with the asking price of $140,000. Heyman got commitments from several people and entities to help purchase the property…
