COVID-19 fears close Urbanna town office

Due to COVID-19 precautions, the Urbanna Town Council voted to keep the town office closed until Dec. 29.

The action came at council’s Dec. 10 meeting in which Urbanna Mayor Diane Gravatt said she ordered the Urbanna town office closed on Wednesday, Dec. 9, when it was learned that a family member of a town employee had contracted COVID-19.

Council’s vote was not unanimous. Mayor-elect and current councilor Barbara Hartley voted against the motion to close the town hall. Voting in favor were councilors Larry Chowning, George DeVries, Bill Goldsmith, Bill Smith and Boyd Wiley.

Just hours after council’s vote, Gov. Ralph Northam announced new restrictions to control the spread of COVID-19. They went into effect on Dec. 14 and will be in force through Jan. 31, 2021…
