Schools’ devices will trap unsafe particles

Supervisors  OK $123,367 in purchases

The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors (MCBS) approved on Nov. 4 the use of Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) funds by the Middlesex County Public Schools (MCPS) to integrate “bipolar ionization” equipment into HVAC systems in county schools.

Bipolar ionization technology is used to deac-tivate potentially harmful substances like airborne mold, bacteria, allergens and viruses. It can also filter out breath droplets and dust particles that can transport viruses, said Dustin Harris, MCPS director of Operations and Maintenance.

MCPS Superintendent Peter Gretz informed supervisors that “there is evidence that bipolar ionization technology is killing the COVID-19 virus.” The technology has been used in healthcare facilities for many years for many applications, he said.

Harris said that neighboring school systems are installing the system in school buildings in hopes of slowing down the spread…
