A plane crashed into a detached garage of a home on Sandy Beach Road in Deltaville on Tuesday, Nov. 24 at about 9:31 a.m., and there is one confirmed fatality, reported Sgt. Michelle Anaya, of the Virginia State Police. Preliminary investigations reveal that a fixed wing aircraft (unknown type at this time) struck a garage type structure, causing it to become completely engulfed in flames, said Sgt. Anaya.

Middlesex firefighters douse burning debris at the crash scene Tuesday morning.

Sondra Englar, who lives nearby heard the sound of a plane engine just before the crash. “I didn’t think anything, because planes fly over here all the time, until the house shook.” The plane burst into flames and then the fuel tank exploded, she said. Black smoke filled the air and could be seen for miles.

At press time on Tuesday, the VSP were still investigating.
