Woman’s Club craft sale still on; shops, restaurants still doing business

COVID-19 is weighing down Santa’s sack with a lump of coal or two, canceling Urbanna’s main Christmas-theme offerings, but not everything.
The three main Christmas-theme Light Up Urbanna events set for Saturday, Dec. 5 — the golf cart and pet parades and a Christmas tree lighting and caroling ceremony — have been canceled. The announcement came Friday from Urbanna Beautification Inc. Director Karen Lowe. “It was not the activities per se that raised concerns, it was the unknown numbers who might attend,” read a news release Lowe emailed to the Sentinel. “It was a very difficult decision at all levels, as we are all here to promote tourism to our town, shops and restaurants.”
However, some Dec. 5 events offered in conjunction with Light Up Urbanna, are still scheduled. These include the Middlesex County Woman’s Club Craft Sale, which, as of Friday, remained set for 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on the grounds of the Woman’s Club building (the Middlesex colonial courthouse) at 210 Virginia St. in Urbanna. For information, call Club Publicity Chairman Sue Warner at 850-529-4387. Also, a number of Urbanna shops still plan to have special open house promotions Dec. 5.
And although the plug was pulled on an official Urbanna tree lighting ceremony, socially distanced folks in small numbers can still view the 12-foot town Christmas tree, which should be up and illuminated by Dec. 5. It is being set up on the “Town Green,” the Virginia Street vacant lot between the Urbanna Post Office and the Urbanna ABC liquor store. They tree is being decorated by Aaron Ward.
Lowe reminds everyone that barring further new COVID-19 restrictions by the governor, Urbanna’s eateries will still be open. “The restaurants will be serving,” she said. “Please enjoy the outdoor picnic tables provided by the UBI.” The tables are on the Town Green and the lot immediately west of the colonial courthouse.
It was announced months back that Urbanna will not have its traditional Christmas parade this year, due to COVID-19 concerns.
