No supervisors OK on letter supporting Scenic River status

The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors (MCBS) is the only governing body out of nine not to approve a letter to Virginia Department of Conservation Resources (DCR) requesting an eligibility criteria study of the lower Rappahannock River for Virginia Scenic Rivers status.

According to DCR officials, the Virginia Scenic Rivers Program’s intent is to identify, designate and help possess outstanding scenic, recreational, historical and natural characteristics of statewide significance for future generations.

Middlesex supervisors tabled action on Sept. 1 to support a DCR criteria study of the Rappahannock River from the Route 3 bridge at Ferry Farm in Fredericksburg to the mouth of the river at Deltaville.

At that meeting, supervisors asked County Attorney Heather Lewis to review Virginia Code sections on “power and authority” pertaining to Scenic Rivers designation and to report back to supervisors.

This came after Executive Director of the Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission Lewis “Lewie” Lawrence cautioned supervisors to make sure they understand all “conditions” that go with Scenic Rivers designation…
