In-person instruction being reconsidered

Middlesex school officials expected to update return to school plan Oct. 12

by Larry Chowning –

The Middlesex County School Board is going to provide an “update on return to school plan” at the 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, board meeting.

The in-person meeting will be open to the public and conducted in the St. Clare Walker Middle School auditorium in Locust Hill. Social distancing will be in place and mask wearing is mandatory. The meeting will not be conducted virtually online.

During the Aug. 10 school board meeting, the school board voted to operate under the governor’s phase one guidelines for reopening schools, with most students staying home using virtual learning techniques.

The board further indicated at the Aug. 10 meeting a plan to revisit the decision and re-evaluate the division’s learning plan after six weeks of implementation, during the Oct. 12 meeting.

The board packet for the meeting states that “the superintendent will provide an update on the instructional and operational implications of the first six weeks of school, including school stakeholders disposition toward hybrid and virtual learning and recently updated Virginia Department of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance for schools.”

The packet also states that the “superintendent recommends that the board receive the information and authorize the superintendent to develop a plan to increase in-person learning opportunities under phase two and phase three guidelines as appropriate.”

The packet states the update of the plan will be towards the end of the open session part of the meeting on Monday.
