Urbanna neighbors team up to transform overgrown area

Sprucing up Urbanna’s Waterman’s Park began with neighbors talking about a facelift for the “pocket park” located at the end of Colorado Avenue.
After 20 years plants had overgrown in the park overlooking the Rappahannock River. “We saw the park and knew there was a beautiful water view beyond the overgrown bushes and vines,” said Sandy Hays. “We wanted to clear it out, clean it up and open up the view of the water and make it a pretty and quaint refuge for anyone looking for a few peaceful and quiet moments.”
Removing the big bushes and the vines was the hardest part. Without digging machines they relied on “man and woman power,” said Sandy.
They worked five or six weeks this summer at their own pace, a few days at a time, when it was not hot.
The wooden steps and picnic table were power washed. New roping was looped over the pilings at the entrance. A reading bench was installed.
Daylilies and lantana were planted…
