MIDDLESEX CO. VIGIL FOR RBG

Mourners (above) gather for an impromptu peaceful candlelight vigil Saturday evening at the old Middlesex County Courthouse in Saluda following the death the previous day of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Afterwards, they left candles and an “RBG” sign at the site as memorial items. Members of the group shared stories, sang and listened to a reading of the Maya Angelou poem, “When Great Trees Fall.”

Ginsburg, 87, died from pancreatic cancer complications after serving 27 years on the court, where she was known as a pioneer for women’s rights and as a member of the court’s liberal wing.

She will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol Friday, reportedly the first woman to be so honored, and will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Her passing has led to a much-publicized Republican-Democrat fight over nominating her successor. (Photo by Gidget B. Valadez)
