Urbanna officials wade into new pool discussion

The idea of building a new community swimming pool in Urbanna has been debated for several years by the Urbanna Town Council. At its Sept. 10 meeting, council seemed to agree that it’s time to consider how to finance a new pool, which is estimated to cost $500,000.

The current pool is 52 years old. 

In 2014, council spent $80,000 to keep it operational. 

In 2018, a consultant determined the pool to be deficient in two areas. The consultant’s report stated the diving area was not deep enough for a diving board. 

The consultant recommended that the swim team members should not use the pool. The problem is that swimmers could hurt themselves when doing “flip turns” at the shallow end, which is three feet deep.

Councilor Bill Goldsmith, who started the pool discussion at last week’s meeting, said there are also issues with water circulation…
