Painting to start soon on Cooks Corner mural

The historical artwork research for a decorative mural to be painted on the side of the concrete block bus maintenance garage shop that faces General Puller Highway (Route 33) at Cooks Corner is nearly complete.

John Koontz, who represents the Hartfield district on the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors, said Tuesday, Sept. 1, at the supervisors meeting that historical details for the mural have been researched and painting of the mural will begin soon.

The old St. Clare Walker High School (SCWHS) vocational/agriculture building is next to the garage. SCWHS operated as the county’s only all-black high school from 1939-1969 during school segregation.

The main brick former St. Clare Walker High School building has been converted into the Cooks Corner Office Complex that houses the MCPS administration and Middlesex County’s Department of Social Services.

As part of the planning of the Cooks Corner revitalization project by the county, the vocational/agriculture building is scheduled to be moved across the road onto county owned property and refurbished for use as a restaurant, leaving the bus garage in clear view…
