Zoar Baptist Church will continue meeting outdoors at Stingray Point

Congregants of Zoar Baptist Church gather in lawn chairs this past Sunday and listen as their pastor, the Rev. John Snow, speaks on the stage in the left background. The Rev. Snow is scheduled to submit a pastor’s column for next week’s Sentinel, so you’ll want to be sure to pick up a copy. (Contributed)

Labor Day usually marks the end of Zoar Baptist Church beach worship services at Stingray Point. However, the pandemic has changed how people worship.

The Rev. John Snow, Zoar’s pastor, announced Sunday that Zoar will continue to meet at the beach as long as the weather allows. Locals and out-of-town residents have been worshipping this way for 48 years. There is plenty of room to spread out and worship safely. Worship is led from a stage set up in a grove of tall pines near the water. There are also designated spaces to park your car or truck and listen on the radio.

“It is always a blessing to worship with visitors and members alike,” said Pastor Snow.  “We invite all to come each Sunday at 8:30 a.m. to worship with us.”

The service is offered near the southeast end of General Puller Highway (Route 33) off Speck Avenue. In the event of rain, this service is offered in the church sanctuary in Deltaville next to the Deltaville Community Association building and the swimming pool.  Masks are available at both venues.

“We have two Sunday school groups that meet on the beach property at 9:30 a.m. after the service,” added Cristie Jenkins.

For the next three months Zoar congregants are studying the book of Isaiah. Study guides are available.
