Middlesex Co. officials sound off on census

Middlesex County Board of Supervisors Hartfield representative John Koontz and Middlesex Department of Social Services (MDSS) Director Rebecca Morgan are encouraging Middlesex County citizens to fill out the 2020 census to aid in the financial health of the county.

Every 10 years, the U.S. Census Bureau is required by the United States Constitution to count all of the nation’s residents. The goal of the 2020 census is to count every person living in the United States. As of Saturday, Aug. 29, Middlesex County has had a 41.7% response rate. It was 40.8% last week with just more than 4,000 having filled it out.      

“We really do need rural folks to respond to the census, otherwise the funding for needs that are intended to be met by existing federal programs, falls to the state, county or individual,” said Koontz in an email last week.

“In (these) times of pandemic crisis, the (financial) cascade downward accelerates as budget constraints across the board become more apparent,” he said.
